"Children are great imitators. So give them something great to imitate."

  1. Emily,

What a great quote, definitely one I may add to the parent handbook I am currently updating. People who do not spend a large amount of time with children do not always realize that children learn from the behaviors that adults model and unfortunately, their young minds do not always differentiate between which behaviors are appropriate or inappropriate. More often than not, when I have had to address an inappropriate behavior from a child with a parent, such as the use of inappropriate language, the parents initial statement is, “I just don’t understand where he learned that.” Of course, that opens the doors for a great discussion on the importance of role modeling and self-reflection of the behaviors, language use, and attitudes we as adults emanate subconsciously. Within a day or so, they have had a rude awakening and return saying, “I noticed I say that or my spouse says that.” Most are grateful for the eye opening experience and become better role models for it.

  2. That quote is such an eye-opener for parents and caretakers. Just as children imitate their home lives they also imitate what takes place at school. Children in their innocence really learn from adults and other children as well. I too have spoken with parents regarding children using inappropriate language. The majority of the parents deny that they could have possibly gotten the language from them and other parents take the advice on being positive influences in the lives of their children.

  3. This is a great quote!!!! More parents should have this posted in there home to remind them that there children are watching everything that is being done at home. Many times children imitate things not knowing they are negative. So if parents monitor the things there children say and do it may have a good impact on the things they do in school.

  4. Hahhahaha!! Emily I picked the same quote for my page. I love this quote it is such a true statement. I notice several times when my kids think that I am not watching they imitate the things I say and the things I do. I have to be very careful what I do in front of them. They are like sponges that soak everything up.

  5. This is another quote that I can definitely relate to. As a teacher, I have to be very mindful of my every move. Therefore, I try to also remain calm and cool in any situation because I know that my students are watching. I want always model good behavior and choices in hopes that they will do the same. I have even caught some of my students trying to mimic the way that I talk and teach.
